LA QUINTA, Calif. – Juniors Curtis Thompson and Stewart Jolly each broke par with rounds of 3-under 68 and 1-under 70, respectively, on Monday afternoon while leading the Tigers into a tie for fifth place in the 12-team field following the first round of this year’s Prestige at PGA West being held this week at the Greg Norman Course.
Thompson ended the day three shots off the pace in a tie for third place, while Jolly finished the round on the cusp of the Top 10 of the leaderboard in a tie for 12th place on the leaderboard.
Junior Ben Taylor and sophomore Zach Wright each added matching rounds of 3-over par 74 to wrap up Monday’s opener in a tie for 37th place as the Tigers posted a team round of 2-over par 286 to kick off the event. LSU will tee off in the second round in a tie for fifth place with No. 17-ranked Washington as the Huskies also posted a team score of 2-over par 286 on Monday.
The No. 11-ranked Stanford Cardinal jumped out to a commanding 11-shot lead in the first round with a team round of 15-under par 269. San Diego State followed in second place with a score of 4-under par 280, while No. 23-ranked UCLA posted a 2-under par 282 for third place and Oregon rounded out the top five in fourth place at 1-over par 285.
Thompson enjoyed a near flawless opening round while carding four birdies with just one bogey en route to a team-low 3-under par 68 as he finds himself in the chase pack for the tournament title.
After trading a birdie at the par-four third hole with a bogey at the par-four fifth hole, Thompson made the turn with a birdie at the par-four ninth hole to sit at 1-under par after the front nine. He then added a pair of birdies on the back nine at the par-five 12th and par-four 15th holes for an opening score of 3-under 68 at the par-71 layout.
Jolly carded four birdies of his own to go along with three bogeys while trailing Thompson in a tie for 12th place with a 1-under 70 on the day. Jolly made his first birdie of the day at the par-four third hole before reeling off three-straight birdies at the par-five eighth, par-four ninth and par-four 10th holes to highlight his opening round, while making bogey at the par-three fourth, par-four 11th and par-four 15th holes on the day.
Freshman Eric Ricard also made an appearance for the Tigers in the opening round of this year’s Prestige at PGA West as he carded a round of 8-over 79 to finish the day in a tie for 63rd place in the individual standings.
Stanford teammates Maverick McNealy and Patrick Rodgers fired matching scores of 6-under par 65 to take an early three-shot lead following the first round, while Thompson joined three other golfers three shots off the pace in a tie for third place at 3-under par 68. Five other golfers posted rounds of 2-under par 69 to round out the Top 10 of the leaderboard in a tie for seventh place overall.
As they were in the first round, the Tigers are paired with Oregon and Pepperdine in Tuesday’s second round as the teams will tee off in the second wave off the front nine of the beginning at 11:30 a.m. CST.
