WINDERMERE, Fla. – While making his first career appearance in LSU’s five-man lineup, freshman Eric Ricard carded four birdies and three bogeys on the day for a 1-under par round of 71 to lead the Tigers to a team score of even-par 288 in the opening round of the 10th-annual Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.
The Tigers wrapped up Sunday’s action in a tie for eighth place in the 15-team field with Texas, while Ricard ended the day in a tie for 16th place as the top Tiger on the individual leaderboard.
Following a sluggish start with bogeys on each of his first two holes at the par-four first and par-three second holes, Ricard birdied the par-five third hole and bogeyed the par-four sixth hole to make the turn at 2-over par for his round. But Ricard bounced back in a big way on the back nine with birdies at the par-five 13th, par-five 17th and par-four 18th holes to finish with a team-low 1-under 71.
Ricard’s effort helped pace the Tigers into a tie for eighth place as they are just eight shots off the pace set by first-round leader Alabama. The top-ranked Crimson Tide posted a team score of 8-under par 280 to take a two-shot lead over Central Florida in second place at 6-under 282 and a three-shot lead over California and Illinois in a tie for third place 4-under 284.
The Tigers also received a pair of even-par 72s from junior standouts Stewart Jolly and Curtis Thompson as each wrapped up the first day of competition in a tie for 23rd place overall. Fellow junior Myles Lewis posted a round of 1-over 73 during Sunday’s action to tie for 32nd place on the leaderboard and round out the team scoring in the first round.
Senior All-SEC performer Andrew Presley, who tied for ninth place at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational a year ago, opened with a 4-over 76 in the first round to finish the day in a tie for 56th place.
Alabama’s Trey Mullinax and California’s Joel Stalter fired the lowest rounds of the day at 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard. Illinois’ Brian Campbell turned in a 5-under par 67 to finish off the day in third place, while Central Florida’s Greg Eason, UNLV’s Kurt Kitayama and Arkansas’ Sebastian Cappelen rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth place at 4-under par 68.
The Tigers are paired with Vanderbilt and Texas in Monday’s second round and will tee off from the front nine beginning at 7 a.m. CT.
