Jolly Fires Career Best; Men's Golf Vaults to Second
WINDERMERE, Fla. - Tiger freshman Stewart Jolly played a near flawless round with four birdies and just one bogey on his card for a career-low 3-under par 69 to help vault the LSU men's golf team into sole possession of second place following Monday's second round at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational held this week at Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Fla.
The Tigers also received matching scores of 1-over 73 by senior Sang Yi and sophomore Andrew Presley, as well as a 2-over 74 by sophomore Landon Lyons en route to a team score of 1-over par 289 for the best round of the day to climb four spots from their position in a tie for sixth place at tee time.
With a 36-hole score of 8-over par 584, LSU trails the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns by 10 strokes in the team race as they prepare to tee off with one another in Tuesday's final round at 8:40 a.m. CDT.
Texas followed its 10-under 278 in the first round with an 8-over 296 in the second round to emerge from the final group 10 shots clear of the field at 2-under 574 for the championship. North Florida follows back in third place at 11-over 587, while Stanford is in fourth place at 14-over 590 and Alabama rounds out the top five in fifth place at 15-over 591 for the three-day, 54-hole championship.
LSU will compete in the final wave for the second-straight tournament as the Tigers join Texas and North Florida in Tuesday's final round with tee times set to begin from the front nine.
After reeling off five-straight pars to open the day, Jolly dipped into red figures with back-to-back birdies on the par-four sixth and par-five seventh holes before making the turn at 2-under par for his round. After making another birdie at the par-three 11th hole, Jolly dropped to 3-under par overall ahead of his one and only bogey of the day at the par-five 13th hole and a fourth birdie at the par-three 15th hole en route toward a team tournament-low 3-under par 69 on his second round scorecard.
Jolly, who opened the tournament with a 7-over 79 to tie for 62nd place in Sunday's first round, moved all the way into the Top 20 in a tie for 18th place on the leaderboard with his 36-hole score of 4-over 148.
Jolly joined both Presley and Yi in the Top 20 of the individual leaderboard as Presley in now on the cusp of the Top 10 in a tie for 11th place at 2-over par 146 and Yi is in a tie for 14th place at 3-over par 147 here at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in one of the elite collegiate events of the regular season.
Lyons follows his teammates in a tie for 23rd place overall after carding a 2-over 74 for a two-day total of 5-over 149. Freshman Curtis Thompson followed his 1-over 73 for the first round with a 9-over par 81 for the second round to finish the day in a tie for 48th place overall at 10-over 154.
Texas freshman Jordan Spieth continues to lead the race for the individual crown as he holds a four-stroke lead with his 36-hole score of 6-under 138. Spieth followed his tournament-low 7-under par 65 in the first round with a 1-over par 73 in the second round to grab a four-shot lead over the Stanford group of Patrick Rodgers and Andrew Yun in a tie for second place at 2-under 142.
