BATON ROUGE – On the strength of his victory at the 53rd Northeast Amateur Invitational and representing the United States at the 2014 Palmer Cup in recent weeks, LSU’s rising senior Stewart Jolly has been named the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for June as announced by the SGA on Wednesday.

Jolly was the only golfer in the field to break par at the 53rd Northeast Amateur Invitational held June 18-21 at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island, as he carded a winning 72-hole score of 2-under 274 to take the title by two strokes over Oklahoma State standout Jordan Niebrugge. That included back-to-back scores of 2-under 69 in the first and second rounds.

The Northeast Amateur is one of the premier amateur championships of the summer circuit that attracts an impressive field of nationally-ranked amateurs year in and year out.

Jolly followed his victory at the Northeast Amateur by representing the United States at the 2014 Palmer Cup as part of the 10-man squad competing at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England. The Europeans won a decisive 18.5-11.5 victory over the United States to win the Palmer Cup this season in the event held from June 26-28 a week ago.

Jolly joined the likes of senior Smylie Kaufman, fellow juniors Ben Taylor and Curtis Thompson and sophomore Zach Wright in earning LSU’s best finish at the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships since 1967 when they advanced to the NCAA Final Four of match play at the 2014 NCAA Championships held at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Tigers officially tied for third place at the NCAA Championships while finishing just one round short of the national championship match as semifinalists in match play.

The Tigers, who also earned a runner-up finish at the 2014 SEC Championships, last finished in second place at the SEC Championships and in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships to cap the 1988-89 season.

Jolly continues to add to his impressive postseason resume this season as he has already been honored as a Third-Team All-American by both PING and Golfweek, as well as a First-Team All-SEC performer by the SEC’s head coaches for the first time in his collegiate career. He has also claimed PING All-Southeast Region honors for his performance in leading the Tigers during the 2013-14 season.
