WINDERMERE, Fla. - Led by matching scores of 1-over par 73 by sophomore Andrew Presley and freshman Curtis Thompson, the LSU men's golf team posted a team total of 7-over 295 for the afternoon to wrap up Sunday's first round in a four-way tie for sixth place at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.
The Tigers matched the opening efforts of national powers Augusta State, Florida and Oklahoma State for a tie for sixth place in the 15-team field in one of the elite events in all of college golf.
The No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns have jumped out to a commanding lead with their 10-under 278 in the first round. The Longhorns actually lead runner-up North Florida by nine shots heading into Monday's second round as the Ospreys were the only other team in the field to break par on the afternoon at 1-under 287. Alabama and Stanford follow in a tie for third at 3-over 291, while California rounds out the top five of the team standings with a score of 5-over 293 in the first round.
Both Presley and Thompson find themselves just two shots out of the Top 10 of the leaderboard with their matching scores of 1-over par 73 to tie for 17th place following the opening round.
Presley carded two birdies at the par-four first and par-five seventh holes to go along with three bogeys on his round en route to an opening-round 73. Thompson was just as steady with a birdie for No. 7 and back-to-back birdies at the par-five 13th and par-four 14th holes on the back nine to go along with four bogeys in the round. They are now among 14 golfers in a tie for 17th place following the first round.
After earning top-10 finishes in two of his three starts this season, senior standout Sang Yi opened with an effort of 2-over 74 to finish the day in a tie for 31st place. Sophomore Landon Lyons added a 3-over 75 toward LSU's team total to tie for 36th place on the leaderboard following the opening round.
In his first round as part of LSU's five-man starting lineup, freshman Stewart Jolly opened with a score of 7-over 79 to finish the day in a tie for 62nd place in the individual standings.
The Longhorns were led in the opening round by standout freshman Jordan Spieth, who jumped out to his four-shot lead on the strength of a 7-under 65 in Sunday's action. Spieth leads the likes of North Florida's Sean Dale, Alabama's Justin Thomas and Stanford's Andrew Yun, who fired matching 3-under 69s in the first round to finish the day in a three-way tie for second place overall.
Two other Longhorns also wrapped up the opening round among the Top 10 of the individual leaderboard as Toni Hakula and Julio Vegas fired matching 2-under 70s to tie for fifth place in the standings.
The Tigers will play alongside two-time defending national champion Augusta State and national power Oklahoma State in Monday's second round as they will tee off from the front nine as part of the first wave beginning at 7 a.m. CDT. Live scoring of the event can be found online at www.golfstat.com.
