BATON ROUGE - ULM's Mackenzie Miller and LSU's Rachele Fico took home the first Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards of the 2013 season Thursday as voted up by the state's sports information directors.
A sophomore outfielder for the Warhawks, Miller turned in an impressive all-around week as ULM won three of its four games at the Mardi Gras Classic. She went 6-for-7 at the plate with five stolen bases and three runs scored. The Evergreen, Colo., native also picked up her first career three-hit game which included her first career triple against Southeast Missouri State.
A senior hurler for the Tigers, Fico was solid on opening weekend and secured shutout victories over No. 22 North Carolina and Tulsa, a pair of NCAA Regional and 40-win programs from a season ago. The SEC Pitcher of the Week fanned 14 Tulsa batters, the second highest single-game output of her career, during a 1-0 win in 10 innings.
It's the 11th weekly award for Fico and first for Miller from the LSWA.
