BATON ROUGE - The LSU softball team will return to competition for the first time since its run to the Women's College World Series and will open the fall season with a quartet of games over the weekend at Tiger Park.
LSU will face off against Lamar [Saturday - 4:30 p.m.], Belhaven [Saturday - 7 p.m.], Northwestern State [Sunday - 2 p.m.] and LSU-Eunice [Sunday - 4 p.m.]. Admission is free to all fall contests at Tiger Park.
"Our goals are to work on ourselves and get our fundamentals correct during the fall season," head coach Beth Torina said. "I think if we do our job and are prepared, we will get the results that we want in the fall. It will be nice to see the team work together as one unit."
Fico garnered a 20-13 record, a stout 1.12 ERA, amassed 221 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .183 batting average during her 230.1 innings of work. All four marks were among the SEC's Top 6.
Andrews provided one of the most memorable moments of the 2012 season when she scored on an infield popup to vault LSU to a 1-0 win over South Florida at the WCWS.
The Tigers will welcome six newcomers into the fold sparked by Bianka Bell and Ashley Czechner. Bell is the reigning Florida Gatorade Player of the Year, while Czechner pitched Chattanooga State to the 2012 NJCAA National Championship.
"My plan is to play everyone evenly in the fall so I can get a look at what everyone can do at game speed," Torina said. "Game speed is a lot different than practice speed. You never know if you have one of those gamers on your team until you let them go play against somebody else. I'm excited to see what the newcomers will bring to the table."
Following this weekend's tournament, the Tigers will take on McNeese State for a Tuesday doubleheader. LSU also plays host the National Pro Fastpitch Back to School Tour on October 19 where former All-American Brittany Mack returns to Tiger Park.
