BATON ROUGE, La. – Jacee Blades of LSU and Hayley Hayden of Louisiana-Lafayette have been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Co-Hitters of the Month, while LSU’s Baylee Corbello was named the Pitcher of the Month in a vote by members of the association.
Blades, a senior outfielder for the Tigers, leads the team with a .409 batting average in the first month of the season, backed by a team-leading 27 hits through 21 games. In one week during the month, the Baton Rouge, La., native hit .667 with 16 hits over a seven-game stretch as she nearly topped hitting over .450 at the plate.
Hayden, a freshman for the Ragin Cajuns and West Monroe product, is second on the team with a .358 batting average, and leads ULL with eight home runs and 21 RBI. She has a pair of two-home run games on the season, hitting a pair against Memphis, driving in five runs, at the Ragin’ Cajuns Invite on Feb. 15, and two against Rutgers, driving in all four Ragin’ Cajuns runs, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Feb. 23.
Corbello has been the workhorse for the LSU softball team through the first month of the season, as she has won her last five games and leads the Tiger pitching staff with a 7-2 record and 1.07 earned run average. She has nine complete games , as she began her young career by becoming the fourth freshman pitcher in team history to earn double-digit strikeouts in their first career start with 10 against Minnesota, following that up with 13 against Oklahoma State which is the third most by a freshman in a single game.
