Nominee for SEC Offense Player of the Week

Sandra Simmons, So., Fountain Valley, California
Simmons hit a team-high .400 for the week as the sophomore infielder was named to the 2014 Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team for her efforts. Simmons went 6-for-15 from the plate with six RBIs and six runs scored which included tying a career-high four RBIs against SIU Edwardsville. She scored the only run of the game in the win over Oklahoma State with a home run, while going 2-for-4 against Central Arkansas with two runs scored. Simmons had an on base percentage of .526 and slugging percentage of .800 with two stolen bases. She started every game at first base and committed no errors in helping LSU to the second best fielding percentage in the tournament at .975.

Nominee for SEC Pitcher & Freshman of the Week

Baylee Corbello, Fr., Lake Charles, Louisiana
Corbello made her LSU debut over the weekend at the Tiger Classic and became the fourth freshmen in team history to record double-digit strikeouts in consecutive games as she earned a 1-1 record. Her 23 Ks is tied for the SEC lead after one weekend of play. Corbello was named to the Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team after she fanned 10 against Minnesota to become the fifth pitcher in program history to reach double digit Ks in their first start. Then, she tied for the third most strikeouts in a game by a freshman with 13 against Oklahoma State. Corbello held the Cowgirls to just one hit in the complete-game shutout. At one point, the Lake Charles, La. native retired 11-straight OSU batters in the win. She closed out the game in style and worked her way out of a bases loaded with back-to-back strikeouts.

Notes on the Tigers
LSU is 4-2 on the season after hosting the Tiger Classic over the weekend. After dropping the first two games of the year to No. 10 Texas and Minnesota, the Tigers regrouped to win the last four in a row to close out the tournament. The Tigers had the top overall batting average for any team with a .314 clip. A.J. Andrews, Baylee Corbello and Sandra Simmons were named to the Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team. Simmons hit .400 on the week, with six hits including a double, triple and home run. Her six RBI were the most for any player in the tournament. Andrews had the highest batting average of the tournament, hitting .462 with six base knocks. Andrews stole five bases in the event, two more than teammate Simone Heyward to lead the event. The Tigers got some memorable pitching performances on the weekend, as Corbello became the fourth freshman pitcher in program history to earn double-digit strikeouts in her first two starts. Corbello fanned 13 Oklahoma State batters in a 1-0 win, earning 23 on the weekend which is tied for the SEC lead among pitchers. On Sunday, Kelsee Selman struck out 13 Central Arkansas batters and tied Corbello for the third most by a freshman pitcher in a game. Selman struck out eight looking which leads the SEC after one weekend with Corbello second with seven.
