BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU shortstop Bianka Bell came away with the SEC Freshman of the Week accolades Monday as announced by the league office. It marks the first career weekly award for Bell from the SEC.
Bell was spectacular as the Tigers became the third SEC team to reach the 30-win plateau during the 2013 campaign. She registered hits and collected RBIs in all four of LSU’s games last week en route to a .429 batting average, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
Bell ripped her first career grand slam at No. 25 South Alabama, and the four RBIs were a career-high. The Tampa, Florida native ripped a three-run double during the second inning to break open game two of the Samford doubleheader. Bell’s 10 RBIs accounted for half of LSU’s total for the week.
“We’re extremely pleased for Bianka, and this is a well-deserved honor for her,” head coach Beth Torina said. “She’s a special player and one of the most talented freshmen in the SEC. We’re going to need her to continue to produce at a high level as we face a challenging month of April.”
LSU embarks on a nine-game road as the Tigers visit Florida State, a team who is receiving votes in the latest edition of the Top 25 polls, for a Wednesday doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT with both games being broadcasted live by the LSU Sports Radio Network on Country Legends 104.9 FM in Baton Rouge and available online for Geaux Zone subscribers at www.LSUsports.net/live.
