BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Tech's Kristen Miles and LSU's Rachele Fico took home Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards Thursday as voted up by the state's sports information directors.
A freshman outfielder for the Lady Techsters, Miles hit safely in four games last week. She turned in a .615 batting average, reached base safely in 11 of 16 plate appearances and scored seven runs as Louisiana Tech went 3-1. She collected a career-best four hits during a 13-4 win over Southern and scored a career-high three runs twice in the weekend series versus Southern.
A senior pitcher for the Tigers, Fico added two more wins to her ledger and came away with a SEC-low 0.33 ERA during the opening weekend of conference play. She turned in a memorable performance with a program single-game mark of 22 strikeouts which also matched a SEC single-game record held by former Tennessee All-American Monica Abbott. Fico retired 25 of the last 27 hitters she faced and concluded the 1-0 14-inning win with her record-tying 22nd strikeout. The Connecticut native tacked on eight strikeouts in another complete game win to clinch the series win over Mississippi State.
It's the 14th career weekly award for Fico and first for Miles from the LSWA.
