BATON ROUGE - Southeastern Louisiana's Amber Sather and LSU's Rachele Fico claimed Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards Thursday as voted up by the state's sports information directors.
A sophomore designated player for the Lady Lions, Sather played a pivotal role as Southeastern won the Jimmy John's Lion Classic II title. She turned in a .500 batting average, three home runs and eight RBIs. Sather started her week with a three-run dinger and drew four walks, a program single-game record, during a 13-5 win over UMBC. The next day she provided a grand slam to help the Lady Lions rally from a five-run deficit for a 7-6 victory against South Dakota. Sather also drove home the game-winning on a RBI double during a 3-2 triumph over LSU-Alexandria.
A senior pitcher for the Tigers, Fico tacked on four more wins sparked by a one-hit shutout of NCAA Regional and 40-win North Dakota State from a season ago. The last time a LSU hurler started the season with a 6-0 mark was Cody Trahan in 2010. She was touched up for one run eight hits during her 19.2 innings of work. The Connecticut native also racked up 31 strikeouts and became the sixth pitcher in program history to eclipse 600 career Ks. In the process, Fico also moved passed former All-American Brittany Mack into sole possession of fifth place on LSU's all-time list.
It's the 12th weekly award for Fico and first for Sather from the LSWA.
