BATON ROUGE -- LSU freshman second baseman J.C. Holt added another honor to his list of post-season awards on Tuesday when he was named a second team Freshman All-American by Baseball America magazine.
Holt, a native of Sieper, La., was second on the Tigers in 2002 with a .349 batting average, three home runs, 23 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Holt led the Tigers with a .407 batting average in seven NCAA Tournament games, and batted .347 for the full season with runners in scoring position.
Holt, who also started seven games at shortstop in place of an injured Aaron Hill early in the season, batted a team high .411 in the second half of the season to help LSU finish 44-22 after a 16-12 start. The Tigers won the NCAA Baton Rouge regional to advance to the super regional round for the fourth consecutive season, but were swept in two games by Rice in Houston.
Holt was named an honorable mention freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper earlier this month, and was named the Louisiana Freshman of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters' Association last Sunday.
Two other Southeastern Conference players joined Holt on the second team: Ole Miss outfielder Shane Smith, who was the 2001 SEC Freshman of the Year, and Alabama left-handed pitcher Taylor Tankersley. Florida State shortstop Stephen Drew, the brother of St. Louis Cardinals outfielder J.D. Drew, was named as Freshman of the Year.
