BATON ROUGE -- The LSU baseball squad continues to receive significant recognition during its 12-game win streak as the Tigers climbed in the national polls Monday, and second baseman Ryan Schimpf was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.

LSU (35-16-1, 15-11-1 SEC) moved up to No. 16 in both the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball rankings, and to No. 21 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25. Last week, the Tigers were ranked No. 22 by Baseball America and USA Today/ESPN, and No. 23 by Collegiate Baseball.

The Tigers, who are in first place in the SEC Western Division, are riding LSU’s longest win streak since the 2000 club won 13 in a row to complete its national championship season.

Schimpf, a sophomore from Covington, La., led the Tigers to a three-game SEC sweep of Mississippi State last weekend, batting .545 (6-for-11) in the series with one double, three homers, seven RBI and seven runs scored. Schimpf, who also walked four times, posted a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.455 slugging percentage.

Schimpf launched a three-run homer to highlight a seven-run second inning in LSU’s 15-6 victory on Friday. He then unloaded two homers in Saturday’s 16-4 victory a solo blast in the fifth inning and a three-run dinger in the eighth.

LSU returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when the Tigers face New Orleans at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. in the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic.
