Notes on the Tigers
The Tigers posted a 2-1 series victory over Tennessee last weekend, marking LSU’s fourth straight SEC series win … the Tigers have a 13-3 mark in the month of April … LSU is ranked No. 5 in the Perfect Game poll released on Monday … LSU has appeared in the Top 10 of a major college baseball poll for 46 consecutive weeks, and the Tigers have won 21 of their 27 SEC series over the past three seasons … LSU recorded its 13th shutout of the season last Tuesday in a 6-0 victory over Tulane … the Tigers, who have already surpassed the previous school record of 10 shutouts in a season set in 1996, currently lead the nation with the 13 shutouts … LSU hit .364 as a team in its four games last week, collecting 26 runs on 48 hits, including 14 doubles … the Tigers batted .351 in the Tennessee series, scoring 20 runs on 34 hits … freshman outfielder Jake Fraley hit .533 (8-for-15) in the Tigers’ four games last week with two doubles, six RBI, three runs, one stolen base and a .529 on base-percentage … in LSU’s SEC series victory over Tennessee, Fraley batted .455 (5-for-11) with two doubles, three RBI, three runs, one steal and a .462 on-base percentage … Fraley, who is riding a five-game hitting streak, tied a career-high with three hits on Friday night against the Vols, scoring two runs and driving in one … on Sunday, Fraley led off the eighth inning with the score tied 4-4 and drew a walk, later scoring the eventual winning run all the way from first base on second baseman Conner Hale’s double … Fraley is hitting .338 on the year with five doubles, one triple, one homer and 21 RBI … in SEC games, he is batting .333 with three doubles, eight RBI and nine runs scored … sophomore shortstop Alex Bregman hit .444 (8-for-18) in LSU’s four games last week with two doubles, three RBI and two runs … Bregman was 6-for-15 (.400) in the Tennessee series with two doubles, three RBI, two runs and one steal … sophomore rightfielder Mark Laird delivered his second game-winning, walk-off hit in less than two weeks in Friday’s 8-7 win over Tennessee … Laird’s two-out single with runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth lifted LSU to the victory; Laird also lined a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning on April 12 to give LSU a 5-4 win over Arkansas … junior right-hander Joe Broussard, named to the 2014 Stopper of the Year Watch List, appeared in all four LSU games last week … Broussard, who was credited with the win in Friday’s victory over Tennessee, worked 3.2 shutout innings during the week, scattering five hits with no walks and six strikeouts … he turned in a dominating effort in the top of the ninth inning Friday versus Tennessee, striking out all three Volunteer batters that he faced with the score tied 7-7; LSU won the game, 8-7, in the bottom of the ninth.
