BATON ROUGE – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for January.

January’s student-athletes of the month were Parker Bugg [Baseball], Chanice Chase [Track & Field], Shavon Coleman [Men’s Basketball], Terry Hughes [Track & Field], Terrence Magee [Football] and Rainey White [Swimming & Diving].

Bugg is majoring in accounting, while Chase and Coleman are interdisciplinary studies majors. Hughes is majoring in sport administration, Magee is majoring in sports management and White is a sociology major.

A freshman pitcher from San Diego, Calif., Bugg joins the Tigers as a 34th round selection to the Baltimore Orioles in the 2013 MLB draft. He also led his Rancho Bernardo High School team to two CIF San Diego Section D1 Championships. During the first game of the LSU Baseball Purple-Gold World Series in November, Bugg pitched three scoreless innings for the Purple team.

Chase, a sophomore hurdler from Ajax, Ontario, Canada, qualified to run in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds and finished a quarterfinalist in the latter. Also competing in the 60-meter hurdles, she ran her personal best time of 8.77 during the Texas A&M Triangular Meet. At the recent Auburn Indoor, Chase took third place in the finals of 60-meter hurdles with a personal best 8.45 and took a 4x400 meter relay victory.

A senior forward from Thibodaux, La., Coleman has logged six consecutive started fueled by a quartet of 10-plus point performances. He racked up a season’s best 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting during LSU’s victory over Missouri. Coleman also played a major role in the Tigers upset of No. 11 Kentucky where he pumped in 14 points to go along with a season-high nine rebounds. He participated in Tiger Athletic Foundation’s first ever Thank-a-Thon, where student-athletes were able to express their gratitude to the donors supporting LSU Athletics.

Hughes, a sophomore thrower from Prairieville, La., is a multi-talented athlete that competes in weight throw, discus, hammer and javelin events. He made his collegiate debut at the Louisiana Classics, where he set a personal best 198 feet, 10 inches and captured a fifth-place finish in javelin. He later set another personal record with a 142 feet, one inch discus throw along with an eighth-place finish at the Battle on the Bayou. Hughes wrapped up the indoor season reaching another personal best of 42-11¾ and sixth place in the weight throw at the LSU Invitational.

A junior running back from Franklinton, La., Magee received SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors following his performance against then-No. 10 Texas A&M. He played in all 13 games this season, ranking second on the team in rushing yards with 86 carries for 626 yards and fourth on the team in all-purpose yards with 720. Magee has participated in the Big Buddy Day of Mentor program, which gives elementary school students the ability to shadow student-athletes on campus, and he also earned Student-Athlete of the Month honors in September of 2011.

White, a senior sprint freestyle and butterfly swimmer from Mountain Brook, Ala., proves a consistent swimmer in relays, recently taking victories against Oklahoma Baptist in the 3x100 butterfly, against South Carolina in the 200 medley and against Tulane in the 200 freestyle. Her performance during her LSU career has also garnered back-to-back NCAA Qualifier honors, in 2012 and 2013. Outside of the water, White has participated in Geaux BIG Baton Rouge Day, where student-athletes painted a playground at a local elementary school.

For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
