HAMMOND, La. - LSU first baseman Mason Katz and Tulane right-hander Ian Gibaut were each named Monday as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Baseball Players of the Week following their respective performances last week.
Katz (Harahan, La./Jesuit HS), who was named the LSWA Hitter of the Week, led the nationally-ranked Tigers to five wins last week, including a three-game sweep of Pac-12 opponent Washington. The senior hit .353 (6-for-17) during the week with three home runs, 10 RBI, one double and six runs scored while also drawing four walks and recording a .476 on-base percentage.
Katz recorded the first multi-home run game of his career in Saturday's win over UW, highlighted by a three-run homer in the first inning of UW ace Austin Voth. Katz added a two-run home run in Sunday's finale against the Huskies, which erased a 2-0 deficit and helped LSU to a 7-5 victory.
Gibaut (Houston, Texas/Lamar HS), was named the LSWA Pitcher of the Week, after recording a win and two saves in 7.2 scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen last week. The true freshman recorded his first career save in a win over Northwestern State last Tuesday, tossing 1.2 innings with three strikeouts.
He helped preserve a one-run lead for starter Tony Rizzotti in the Green Wave's series opener against High Point University last Friday, tossing a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year. Gibaut closed out the week by earning his first collegiate victory as he tossed a season-high 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and recording three strikeouts in an 11-10 win over HPU.
