LSU Baseball - Quotes from coach Paul Mainieri following 2012 NCAA Selection Show

On the picks by the selection committee...
"I think they really did a good job. I really do. And I know there's always going to be teams that are disappointed that they didn't get in. But my concern was I felt that we had clearly earned a national seed being the outright SEC champion and I'm just really glad that it ended up playing out that way."

On the upcoming regional games...
"You don't want to look too far ahead because the Super Regional, the national seed, all that stuff means nothing if we don't get the job done this weekend in the regional tournament. And now our total focus will be on this regional tournament."

On the opponents in the Baton Rouge Region...
"They [ULM] have got a good ball club. You can see, the way they play the game. They've got the Sun Belt Conference player of the year in their shortstop (Jeremy Sy). Of course I was very interested to see how (ULM pitcher) Randy Zeigler would throw, who played here at LSU on our 2009 team and then made a transfer to a junior college and then on to Louisiana-Monroe. He threw a very good game yesterday (in the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship final). And then of course the other two teams - Belmont and Oregon State. I don't personally know a lot about Belmont at this time. We'll learn a lot more about them. I understand they're a very up-and-coming program. They played several SEC teams tough this year. And then of course Oregon State. What can you say about Oregon State? They're not as well-known and talked about down here, but they're one of the best programs in all of college baseball. You don't have to look any further than their back-to-back national championships a few years ago. The major leagues are littered with former Oregon State players, and Pat Casey is one of the very best coaches in the country. So I think it's going to be a very intriguing regional. A couple of teams that we've not had here before in Oregon State and Belmont, and of course Louisiana-Monroe we did not play this year in the regular season. So to have them coming in for the postseason, another Louisiana team, I think is very exciting. I think it's going to be a very competitive tournament, I think it's going to be a lot of fun."

On the 7 p.m. game time on Friday night...
"I've decided to switch, along with the advice of our administration, we decided to switch our game to the night game on Friday. We're really doing that for the benefit of our fans so that they can sit and watch the game and be a little bit more comfortable and hopefully become more a part of the game, enthusiasm and passion-wise, as opposed to just trying to survive in the heat of the day."

On getting back to postseason play after missing the tournament last season...
"I can't lie - it's very special to be back. Obviously I felt very strongly that we deserved to be in the field last year. Last year when we had this selection show, it wasn't a very pleasant experience and I don't want to ever feel that again. I felt that we deserved it and I'll always feel that way."

On whether he'll pitch Aaron Nola in game one and Kevin Gausman in game two...
"We're going to talk about that. No final decision has been made on that yet, but that's certainly something that we're contemplating. That would not be in any way to take Louisiana-Monroe lightly of course, because they do have an excellent team."

On the matchup with Louisiana-Monroe...
"They swing the bats well. In my time here, this is our third hosting of a regional. Clearly they're the very best four seed that we will have faced. And I don't mean that in any way disrespectful to Southern or Texas Southern. So Louisiana-Monroe, the Sun Belt Conference champion, they're a legitimately qualified team that is capable of beating anybody in our field. So the worst thing that we could possibly do would be to take them lightly, and that won't happen."

May 28, 2012

On the Contrast of Emotions From Last Year to Right Now...
"It's completely different. Last year, we were at the lowest of lows feeling like we deserved to be in a tournament. Now, this year we are at the highest of highs and getting a national seed. That was the talk, but it doesn't guarantee you anything as a national seed. As seen in this tournament, there are 64 good teams. It's going to be a tough road, but this team is ready and we're looking forward to Friday night."

On the Mentality to Win in the Regional...
"Last weekend (at the SEC Tournament) there were so many uncertainties. We were trying to play for different things, and we didn't know what was going to happen when it came to committee selections. This weekend we know what's in front of us. We've got a plan and we know how to execute. We just have to get the job done."

On playing ULM...
"I'm really excited. I told my parents that I hoped we would end up playing ULM. I grew up with most of those guys and it's going to be a lot of fun to be able to play them in an atmosphere like this in the NCAA postseason."

On Playing His First NCAA Postseason Game...
"This is what you come to LSU for, to play in the postseason and for all of the fans in Alex Box. It's something that I have always looked forward to. I can't wait."

On Staying Focused on Regionals...
"If we don't handle business in Regionals then we won't see the Super Regionals. We have to take it one game at a time, just like we have all year with the SEC series. We go one game at a time and take it from there."

On the Team's Feelings When the Sites for Super Regionals Were Announced...
"We were really nervous after last year. We wanted that National Seed, so when they announced us as No. 7 it felt pretty good."

On Playing Friday Night instead of Friday Afternoon ...
"I think that's good for the fans. Alex Box is going to be packed, the fans are going to be crazy and it's going to be a lot of fun."

On ULM pitcher Randy Zeigler...
"He's going to come out motivated and hyped up. It's going to be a lot of fun though. I know he wants to come out here and maybe prove a point. I played against him when I was younger; he's a good pitcher. It'll be tough. We're going to need to go out there and compete."

On the Team's Initial Reaction to the Draw...
"We are all really excited about it. It's an exciting time for our team, especially after last year. We knew we were going to be a Regional host, but we were unsure about whether or not we were going to be a National Seed. That was a big question for us, so that was great for us to get the No. 7 seed. We just need to practice hard this week and focus on the teams that we are going to play this weekend."

On the Importance of Hosting Postseason at Alex Box...
"It's huge. Friday night our fans are going to be crazy. It's something I am really excited to see. I haven't seen the Regional here yet. One of my buddies from Oregon State told me that he couldn't wait to play here and see the environment of the SEC and Alex Box Stadium. It's a fun time for us and we are all really excited."

On His Reaction to Getting the No.7 National Seed...
"It was awesome. Last year the last memory I have is kicking the chair when I walked out of the room. Waiting to see if you're a National Seed is a little bit better than waiting to see if you're in the tournament at all. I had a good feeling about getting the National Seed. It was very exciting. We all gave out a sigh of relief and now we just have to see how it plays out."

On LSU's Opponents in the Regional...
"These other teams aren't going to come here and lay down for us. ULM has been playing well. They had a good season. I know we are probably going to face Randy Zeigler, a guy who used to be here at LSU. He's going to come here with some fire. It's going to be a tough Regional, but we are going to focus on Friday night and move on from there."

On Playing a Night Game Friday...
"I'd rather play when the sun goes down. This is a lot of the guys' first Regional play, so it's going to be exciting."
