Gausman Named to USA Baseball Collegiate Team

BATON ROUGE, La. - LSU freshman pitcher Kevin Gausman was named Friday to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

The team is comprised of the top collegiate baseball players in the country, and it will compete this summer in a schedule of exhibition games against the world's top baseball talent.

The season gets underway June 22 in Keene, N.H. The team will remain in the New England area through June 29 before departing for North Carolina, where it will prepare to host Japan in the 38th USA vs. Japan All-Star Series. The series will conclude on July 8 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.

Gausman, a right-hander from Centennial, Colo. finished the 2011 regular season ranked No. 2 in the SEC in opponent batting average (.215) and No. 4 in the league in strikeouts (86). He was named SEC Freshman of the Week after firing a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts against Tennessee on May 13.

Gausman also earned SEC Freshman of the Week recognition after posting a win over Kentucky on April 29, when he limited the Wildcats to one run on two hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts.

Players who taken the field for the USA Collegiate National Team and have gone onto Major League Baseball success include such notables as Jim Abbott, Troy Glaus, Todd Helton, Ryan Howard, Barry Larkin, Tino Martinez, Dustin Pedroia, David Price, Huston Street, Mark Teixeira, Troy Tulowitzki, Jason Varitek and Ryan Zimmerman.
