BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri and former coach and athletics director Skip Bertman took the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” Monday at Alex Box Stadium in support of finding a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the debilitating condition also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Mainieri was drenched by Kelly Viator, executive director of the Louisiana-Mississippi chapter of the ALS Association, and Bertman was soaked by longtime LSU baseball fan Ivan Cabrera, who presented a monetary contribution to Viator before the ice-water dunking.

Funds raised through the Ice Bucket Challenge support the mission of the ALS Association - to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig's disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.

To fulfill this mission, the ALS Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other patient services to Persons with ALS (PALS), their families, health professionals and the public. The Association is also actively involved in advocating for scientific research and for the rights of people with ALS.

The ALS Association is one of many Baton Rouge area charitable organizations with which Mainieri is involved.

Others include Cancer Services of Baton Rouge, United Way Campaign, Prostate Cancer Awareness, Louisiana Legacy Junior Achievement, Kelli Leigh Richmond Ovarian Cancer Foundation, Dreams Come True, Baton Rouge Green, Baton Rouge Children’s Advocacy Center, Read Across America, Better Business Bureau of Baton Rouge, LSU Foundation, Cal Ripken Little League, East Baton Rouge Lion’s Club and Sunrise Rotary Club.
