BATON ROUGE -- Following a stellar performance at the Tyson Invitational last weekend, LSU track and field standout Xavier Carter was named the SEC Men's Runner of the Week it was announced Wednesday by the conference office.
The league honor is Carter's second of the season as he was also recognized during the week of Jan. 23.
Carter, a sophomore from Palm Bay, Fla., recorded his second straight win in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line in blistering 45.89-second speed. The time, a new personal best, ranks as the fastest in the world this season and the fourth-fastest in Tiger school history.
In addition, Carter anchored the Tigers' 4x400-meter relay team to the NCAA's top time in the event this season as he teamed with Kelly Willie, Reggie Dardar and Melville Rogers to finish in 3:05.28. The time is the second fastest in the world this year and sits behind only the new world record mark of 3:01.96 set by Team USA at that same meet.
For his efforts, Carter earned the nation's No. 1 ranking in the 400 meters this week, while the Tigers maintained their No. 1 status in the 4x400 relay for a fifth straight week.
The Tiger track and field team returns to action this Friday when they host the LSU Twilight at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse beginning at 3 p.m.
