EUGENE, Ore. – After sprinting into Friday’s final in the 200-meter dash with a qualifying performance on Thursday night, Lady Tiger freshman Jada Martin nearly earned a spot on the medal podium with a fifth-place finish as she clocked a wind-aided 23.35 seconds for fifth place in the event at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships.

Martin returned to the Hayward Field track for Friday’s final after posting the seventh-fastest time of the semifinal round at 23.57 (+1.2) during Thursday’s action at the University of Oregon.

She dropped her time with a windy 23.35 (+2.4) in the final to cross the finish line in fifth place overall in her first career final on the international stage. She followed gold medalist Kaylin Whitney (22.82w) of the United States, silver medalist Irene Ekelund (22.97w) of Sweden, bronze medalist Angela Tenorio (23.15w) of Ecuador and fourth-place finisher Shannon Hylton (23.25w) of Great Britain.

While finishing the race in fifth place, Martin edged Cuba’s Arialis Gandulla (23.48w) in sixth place, Jamaica’s Natalliah Whyte (23.48w) in seventh place and Germany’s Gina Luckenkemper (23.50w) in eighth place.

Martin was not the only Lady Tiger to line up during Friday’s competition at the IAAF World Junior Championships as Class of 2014 recruit Daeshon Gordon advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a qualifying performance of her own in the morning session. Gordon clocked a wind-legal 13.76 (+1.7) for fourth place in the third preliminary heat that proved to be the 18th-fastest time of the afternoon.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and product of Northeast High School, Gordon will line up in the second of three semifinal heats on Saturday afternoon at 4:35 p.m. CT. The World Junior final in the event will follow on Sunday afternoon as part of the finale at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships being held this weekend at Oregon’s Hayward Field.
