Sprinter Martin Advances to World Junior Final

EUGENE, Ore. – Lady Tiger freshman Jada Martin will sprint for a place on the medal podium during Friday’s action at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships after advancing to the final of the women’s 200-meter dash with her performance in Thursday’s qualifying rounds of the event at Oregon’s Hayward Field.

After winning her preliminary heat with a run of 23.62 (+0.1) earlier in the day, Martin lined up in the semifinal round in Thursday’s evening session and dropped her time to 23.57 (+1.2) to finish runner-up to Ecuador’s Angela Tenorio (23.16) in the second of three heats with the seventh-fastest time among the eight sprinters advancing to the final in the event.

Martin will return to the Hayward Field track on Friday night at 9:55 p.m. CT to race for a place on the medal podium in the 200-meter final at this year’s IAAF World Junior Championships.

Rounding out the eight finalists advancing to the women’s 200-meter dash final included Sweden’s Irene Ekelund (22.97w), USA’s Kaylin Whitney (23.05), Cuba’s Arialis Gandulla (23.22), Great Britain’s Shannon Hylton (23.36w), Jamaica’s Natalliah Whyte (23.44w) and Germany’s Gina Luckenkemper (23.67).

LSU’s Class of 2014 recruit Daeshon Gordon will also line up for the first time at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships during Friday’s action at Hayward Field as she steps onto the track for Jamaica in the prelims of the women’s 100-meter hurdles beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
