FORT WORTH, Texas – The third-ranked LSU gymnastics team posted a school-record 197.875 team score in a second-place finish at the Metroplex Challenge Saturday night in the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The previous record high score was a 197.850 against Oklahoma in a neutral meet in Tulsa, Okla., on March 11, 2005.
No. 2 Oklahoma (6-2) won the Metroplex Challenge with a 198.175 that ranks as the nation’s best score this season. No. 17 Arizona (4-5) finished third with a 195.625, and Kentucky (4-7) came in fourth with a 194.850.
Junior Rheagan Courville captured her fifth all-around title of the season with a career-high tying 39.750, including a 10.0 on vault.
Junior Lloimincia Hall earned her second 10.0 of the season and fourth of her career on floor.
It is the first time LSU has scored two perfect 10s in the same meet since Ashleigh Clare-Kearney did it on vault and floor against Michigan State on Feb. 29, 2008. It is the first time two LSU gymnasts earned a 10 in the same meet since March 12, 2004 when April Burkholder and Terin Martinjak recorded 10s on beam at Centenary.
“It was a great team effort tonight to come out on a podium and perform pretty well in front of a great crowd,” LSU head coach D-D Breaux said. “I am grateful we were able to compete here on a podium and gain that experience that I know will benefit us in the long run.
“I am proud that we fought hard all night, and it is a great thing to know we just set a school record and we can go much higher and be that much better.”
LSU (7-2) got off to a fantastic start with a 49.600 on bars that ranks as the second-best team bars total in school history and the best bars score since 2002. Sarie Morrison shattered her career high with a 9.975 to tie for the event title, her fifth bars crown of the year. Jessie Jordan and Britney Ranzy posted new career highs with 9.925s, while Kaleigh Dickson tied her career high with a 9.90. Courville added a 9.875, and Randii Wyrick scored a 9.825.
The Tigers recorded a 49.300 on beam in the second rotation, highlighted by Courville’s career-high tying 9.95. Jordan anchored with a 9.90, while freshman Sydney Ewing matched her season-high with a 9.85. Dickson scored a 9.825, and Hall added a 9.775 to round out the scoring.
LSU tallied a 49.450 on floor in the third rotation. Hall’s 10.0 in the anchor spot brought the crowd to its feet, and it tied her with Burkholder for the school record with four career perfect 10s on floor.
LSU wrapped up the meet with a 49.525 on vault, highlighted by Courville’s 10.0. It is her second career 10, both on vault. Courville’s first 10 came at the SEC Championship on March 23, 2013.
Gnat stuck her vault to earn a season-high 9.95 to finish second in the event. Morrison tallied a 9.90, Ranzy scored a 9.85, Dickson posted a 9.825 and Jordan received a 9.80.
Dickson tied her career high with a 39.425 in the all-around to finish second in the standings.
