BATON ROUGE – Led by a balanced lineup throughout the meet, the No. 1 ranked LSU gymnastics team raced past No. 25 North Carolina State, 197.500-195.525, in front of 5,622 fans in the annual “Pink Meet” Friday night in the Maravich Center.
The 197.500 marked the eighth straight meet in which LSU earned a 197 or higher, tying the school record for consecutive meets with a 197-plus total set during the 2004 season.
LSU (9-3) tallied a 49.500 on vault, 49.325 on bars, 49.325 on beam and 49.350 on floor to finish with a 197.500.
NC State (12-7) posted a 49.125 on vault, 48.800 on bars, 48.700 on beam and 48.900 on floor to score a 195.525.
Junior Rheagan Courville earned her sixth all-around title of the season with a 39.500, and she also tied for the vault title with a 9.925 and the bars title with a 9.90.
Junior Lloimincia Hall tied for the vault title with a season-high 9.925, and she captured the floor crown with a 9.95. It marked her fourth floor title of the year and the 21st of her career.
Senior Sarie Morrison tied for the bars title with a 9.90, her seventh straight meet in which she has won at least a share of the bars crown. She has eight bars titles this season and 28 in her career.
Junior Jessie Jordan, the nation’s No. 1 ranked beam performer, earned a career-high 9.975 on beam to win the title, and her score is the highest by an LSU gymnast in that event since Ashleigh Clare-Kearney recorded a 9.975 in the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge on April 12, 2008.
“The kids were trying to stick landings and trying to do good execution, and in some spots we did,” LSU head coach D-D Breaux said. “However, we did not perform up to our standard, so we will go back in the gym this week and focus on the process.”
LSU opened the meet with a 49.500 on vault, the sixth total of 49.500 or higher this season and the fifth in a row. Courville and Hall shared the title with 9.925s, and the Tigers also received 9.90s from senior Kaleigh Dickson and freshman Ashleigh Gnat and 9.85s from Morrison and junior Britney Ranzy.
LSU recorded a 49.325 on bars in the second rotation, led by matching 9.90s from Courville and Morrison to anchor the event. Jordan and sophomore Randii Wyrick added 9.85s, and Dickson and Ranzy scored 9.825s.
In the third rotation LSU tied the season high on beam with a 49.325, matching the score the Tigers earned at Oklahoma on Feb. 9. Jordan led the way with her career-high 9.975 in the anchor spot, and Gnat finished right behind Jordan with a season-best 9.95. Freshman Sydney Ewing matched her season high with a 9.85, and LSU also counted a 9.80 from Dickson and a 9.75 from Courville.
Hall, the nation’s top-ranked floor performer, led the Tigers with a 9.95 in the anchor spot on floor in the final rotation as LSU ended with a 49.350. Courville and sophomore Jessica Savona finished in a tie for second place in the event with 9.925s. Dickson led off the rotation with a 9.825, and LSU also counted a 9.725 in Ranzy’s first floor routine of the season.
With the win, LSU improved to 14-0 all-time against NC State, including a 6-0 record in the Maravich Center.
“The crowd was great tonight, and I loved seeing all the pink in the stands,” Breaux said. “The fans were really into the meet, and we love the support they give us. Hopefully they will be back in large numbers next week for a big meet against Kentucky.”
LSU will wrap up a three-meet home stand next Friday when the Tigers host Kentucky on Senior Night. The meet is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT in the Maravich Center, and tickets are still available for purchase at www.LSUtix.net or by calling the LSU ticket office at 225-578-2184.
