BATON ROUGE – After opening the 2014 campaign with a 2-0 home victory over the Troy Trojans last weekend, the LSU Tigers will look for their second win on the spin to start the season on Friday night when they welcome the Northwestern State Lady Demons to Baton Rouge for a match that is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT at the LSU Soccer Stadium.

The two sides will be squaring off on the soccer pitch for the first time in 13 years as the Tigers (1-0) own a perfect 3-0 mark in three previous matches against the Lady Demons (1-1), including a 1-0 win during the 2001 non-conference season. LSU has outscored Northwestern State by a 6-0 margin in its three victories in the series.

The Tigers won their third-straight season opener with a 2-0 victory over Troy last Friday night with goals scored by striker Jorian Baucom and midfielder Natalia Gomez-Junco on their LSU debuts.

Baucom made history in her collegiate debut as she scored her first career goal just 48 seconds into the match, marking the fastest goal scored by an LSU Tiger to open a season in the program’s history. Baucom’s score eclipsed the previous fastest goal scored to open a season by Joleen Phillips just 1 minute, 8 seconds into LSU’s 2005 season opener against Oregon State.

While the Tigers kicked off their 2014 season with a win last Friday night, Northwestern State also fired out of the blocks a week ago with a 9-1 win over NAIA opponent Louisiana College before dropping a 3-0 match to in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday in a pair of matches played on their home field at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex in Natchitoches.

The Lady Demons featured eight different goal scorers in their season-opening 9-1 win over Louisiana College with freshman striker Esdeina Gonzalez leading the way with two goals in her collegiate debut in 2014.

Friday’s match will feature a pregame Welcome Back BBQ to cap the first week of the 2014 fall semester as the first 350 students in attendance will receive hot dogs, hamburgers and chips.

The match will be preceded by the second “Friday Nights Under the Lights” youth clinic of this season as kids from kindergarten through the eighth grade or up to 13 years old are invited to take part in free small-sided games and juggling competitions from 6-6:30 p.m. CT on the practice fields adjacent to the LSU Soccer Stadium. Friday’s match will also feature Girl Scouts Night at the LSU Soccer Stadium as all girl scouts in attendance will also be invited to participate in the “Friday Nights Under the Lights” youth clinic prior to kickoff.

After playing host to Northwestern State on Friday night, the Tigers will continue their four-game homestand to open the 2014 season on Sunday evening when they welcome the Rice Owls to Baton Rouge for a match that is set to kick off at 6 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Stadium. They will wrap up their season-opening homestand on Tuesday night when they play host to the Nicholls State Colonels with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
