Penn State Handles Cal Poly in NCAA First Round

BATON ROUGE -- Third-seeded Penn State overmatched No. 14-seed Cal Poly to advance to the second round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, 85-55, on Sunday afternoon at the Maravich Center on the LSU campus.

Penn State (26-5), which boasts seven players 6-2 or taller, dominated all aspects of the game. But, it was guards Maggie Lucas and Alex Bentley who led the Lady Lions in scoring with 19 and 18, respectively.

Penn State forwards Talia East and Mia Nickson combined for 25 of Penn State's 51 rebounds. Nickson completed the double double with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while 6-foot-4 Nikki Greene made all five of her shots for 11 points and eight rounds.

Cal Poly, champions of the Big West, was led by its only player taller than 6-2, Molly Schlemer, who made 11 of her team's 19 field goals. The rest of the Mustangs combined 8 of 59 shooting.

The Mustangs were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament and finished the season 21-11.

Penn State will face the winner of the nightcap between No. 6-seeded LSU and No. 11-seeded Green Bay (6:45 p.m. CT on ESPN2).
