Butch Pierre, who served on the LSU men’s basketball staff for 11 years and who was the Interim Head Coach for the final portion of the 2007-08 season announced on Thursday, May 15, 2008, that he is leaving LSU to take a position on the men’s basketball coaching staff at Oklahoma State University.

The 45-year-old Pierre will be joining the staff of Travis Ford, recently named the new head men’s basketball coach at the Stillwater, Okla., university.

“I’ve had a great experience here and as I leave LSU I can look back at some wonderful times,” said Pierre Thursday afternoon.  “I have always enjoyed tremendous relationships with our players and the athletic department.  I have always given 110 percent to the university and the LSU family.  My family and I have a lot of fond memories of the last 11 years.  LSU is a great institution and I hope to always maintain my relationship with the university, the Baton Rouge community and the good people of Louisiana.  I wish Trent Johnson and the LSU basketball program great success in the future.
“My family and I are looking forward to this new challenge.  It is a great opportunity for me to be a part of something special at Oklahoma State University. “

“I certainly want to wish Coach Pierre all the best of luck in his new position,” said LSU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Trent Johnson Thursday. “Obviously during his time here at LSU, he has had great success in recruiting some very high caliber basketball players.”

Pierre came to LSU in 1997 as an assistant coach under newly hired head coach John Brady and was promoted to associate head coach following the 2001-02 campaign.  He was named Interim Head Coach and the 19th person to serve in that position in the 100 years of LSU basketball on February 8, with a 5-4 record over the final nine regular season games.

During his time at LSU the Tigers won two SEC Championships (2000,2006), three SEC Western Division Championships (200, 2005, 2006) and advanced to the school’s first Final Four (2006) in 20 years.

At LSU as chief recruiter, he has helped the Tigers land four McDonald’s and nine Parade prep All-Americans, seven junior college All-Americans and two who earned national junior college player of the year honors. He was instrumental in the recruiting and player development of 2006 SEC Freshman of the Year Tyrus Thomas, along with SEC Players of the Year Stromile Swift (2000), Brandon Bass (2005)and Glen Davis (2006).

Pierre has made a mark in coaching everywhere he has set up shop and turning losing into winning at each institution he has worked at throughout his career. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State (1984-86) before becoming assistant coach at Kentucky State (1986-88). Pierre returned to Louisiana to Louisiana-Lafayette in 1988, where he served as assistant coach for a year before being named associate coach in 1989, staying there until 1996 when he took an assistant’s job at Charlotte.

Pierre received his undergraduate degree in 1984 and his Master’s in 1986 from Mississippi State.  A native of Darrow, La., Pierre was a prep and Southeastern Conference standout in his playing days. At St. Amant High School, he was a prep All-American and the school retired his jersey in 1980. Pierre started four seasons as a point guard for Mississippi State.
