BATON ROUGE – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes as part of their academic achievements and community service for August.

Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU's Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

August’s student-athletes of the month are Cassie Weil [Women’s Swimming and Diving], Fitzroy Dunkley [Men’s Track and Field], John Michael Busch [Men’s Tennis], Malik Morgan [Men’s Basketball] and Josh Williford [Football]. Jessie Jordan [Gymnastics] was selected as the Shaquille O'Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month for August.

An all-around gymnast coming off a strong sophomore season, Jordan recently spent time giving an inside look into what a day in the life of being a student-athlete is like and gave tours to campers from Heritage Ranch. This service to the community on the LSU campus came after a season where Jordan captured the NCAA Columbus Regional all-around title with a career-high 39.450 and was named a Second-Team All-American. Jordan, a kinesiology major, also was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2013.

Busch, a freshmen tennis player, took a medical redshirt for the Tigers in 2012-13. He was a three-star recruit and ranked the No. 11 prospect in the state of Georgia by the Tennis Recruiting Network. Busch is a management major.

A freshman jumper, Dunkley qualified for the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships where he tallied a wind-aided series-best of 50 feet, 3 ½ inches to finish in 23rd place in the triple jump. The native of Trelawny, Jamaica also competed in the high jump and scored a total of seven points for the Tigers between the SEC indoor and Outdoor Championships. Dunkley is majoring in marketing.

Morgan, a freshman guard and sports administration major, played in all 31 games which included 14 starts. He averaged 5.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. The River Ridge native tallied double figures in three contests which included a career-best 12 points at Tennessee. With a talented group of incoming newcomers, Morgan’s experience should bode well for the Tigers for second-year coach Johnny Jones.

Another freshman who put together a stellar first season for the Tigers was Weil, who set LSU’s all-time three-meter dive record with a score of 372.68 in her first collegiate meet against Auburn. She came away with the SEC Freshman Diver of the Year award and earned a spot on the SEC’s All-Freshman Team. Weil, a mass communications major, also notched a pair of NCAA Honorable Mention All-American honors and scored 11 team points for the Tigers at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

Williford, a senior guard and agricultural business major, will look to bounce back this season after his 2012 campaign was cut short due to injury. He will shift from the right side to the left side of the offensive line and is the projected starter at left guard for the Tigers. As the lone senior on the line, Williford will be relied upon to open up holes for LSU’s rushing attack and provide pass protection for the Tigers.

For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
