Notes on the Tigers
LSU was one of a SEC record eight teams selected to the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The Tigers will face No. 24 Michigan during Friday’s opening round of the NCAA Seattle Regional hosted by the University of Washington. LSU is coming off a sweep of Alabama after falling in five sets at Ole Miss last week. The Tigers finished the regular season with an 18-12 record, an 8-10 mark in SEC play and a No. 30 RPI rating. Briana Holman represented LSU on the All-SEC and All-SEC Freshman Teams. She joins Marina Skender (2005) and Desiree Elliott (2010) as the only players in program history to earn selections to both teams. Holman has registered a team-leading 371 kills and a SEC-best 1.55 blocks per set. Her 188 total blocks are a LSU freshmen single season record, while the 1.55 blocks per set average also ranks fourth nationally – first among freshmen. Malorie Pardo fueled LSU’s offense to 14.75 kills per set and a .255 hitting percentage last week. She eclipsed over 3,500 career assists and her 10.54 per set average is fifth among SEC setters. The Texas native has tallied 19 double-doubles, second-most in the SEC. For the second straight week, Cati Leak ripped over four kills per set highlighted by a SEC career-best 20 spikes at Ole Miss. She also connected for a .464 hitting percentage during the Alabama match. Leak has put together 10-plus kills in her last six matches and eight of her last nine outings. Desiree Elliott turned in 2.43 kills, 0.57 digs and 0.57 blocks per set last week. She belted 11 kills at Ole Miss and has compiled 1,169 career kills which is fifth among SEC active players and 14th on LSU’s all-time list. Helen Boyle chipped in 2.00 kills, 3.25 digs and 0.50 blocks per set sparked by her sixth double dip of the season. She popped 10 kills and added 14 digs versus Alabama. Haley Smith continues to lead the charge for LSU’s back row. She reeled in 4.25 digs per set last week and has provided 10-plus scoops in 24 of her 26 starts at the libero position. Friday’s first serve between LSU and Michigan is set for 7 p.m. CT.
