BATON ROUGE -- A pair of defending national champions will square off in Tiger Stadium to open the 2008 season as LSU will host Appalachian State on Aug. 30. The game will carry at 7 p.m. start time.
The game between LSU and Appalachian State will mark the first time that a defending champion from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) will meet the defending champion from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) in the season-opener the following year.
LSU won the 2007 BCS National Championship with a 38-24 win over Ohio State, while Appalachian State capped its 2007 playoff run with a 49-21 victory over Delaware in the Football Championship Subdivision title game.
The game will mark the second meeting between the two schools as the Tigers posted a 24-0 win over Appalachian State during the 2005 season.
The addition of Appalachian State to the schedule rounds out a 2008 slate that sees the Tigers play a total of eight home games, four of which will come against Southeastern Conference opponents. LSU will play SEC games against Mississippi State, Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium in 2008.
The Tigers will go on the road in 2008 to face Auburn, Florida, South Carolina, and Arkansas. Six of LSU's 12 opponents in 2008 played in bowl games last year.
