BATON ROUGE - The No. 24 LSU men's tennis team defeated Southern Miss 6-1 at W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium on Monday, starting the 2013 season off with a victory. The Tigers are now 35-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

It did not take long for the Tigers to win the doubles point, as No. 33 Chris Simpson and Stefan Szacinski started strong and defeated No. 60 Andrew Goodwin and Matt Frost, 8-1 on court one. Shortly after, Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh defeated Vasco Valverde and Benjamin Feldmann, 8-3 on court two to clinch the doubles point and put the Tigers up 1-0.  Olivier Borsos and Boris Arias' doubles match against Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar was left unfinished with the Tiger duo leading 6-5.

"The doubles looked good," head coach Jeff Brown said. "We still have some work to do, but it's a good team coming back this season."

With a 1-0 lead, LSU's Mark Bowtell quickly extended the Tigers' lead to 2-0 on court five, besting Valverde 6-1, 6-1.

"We kind of took a leap of faith in trying to get Mark cleared and get him a scholarship to come back for a fifth year, because at the time, he wasn't 100 percent," head coach Brown said. "We are excited to see how far he has progressed, and we are looking forward to seeing him have a strong final season."

LSU carried the momentum to court three as Szacinski came back in the first set to force a tiebreaker, which he ultimately won. He defeated Feldmann 7-6(3), 6-2 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Roger Anderson clinched the match for LSU on court six, beating Escobar 7-2(2), 6-4. This marks the senior's first match clinch of his career.

On court two, Simpson dropped the first set against Goodwin, but he quickly stormed back, finishing off the match 6-0, 6-2 to increase the Tigers' lead to 5-0.

Southern Miss got on the scoreboard and cut LSU's lead to 5-1 when Borsos suffered a tough loss to Frost on court one, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Tam Trinh ended the day with a victory for LSU, beating Alvarado 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court four to provide the final margin of victory at 6-1.

LSU (1-0) travels to Starkville, Miss., to face No. 11 Mississippi State on January 26 at 1 p.m. CT in the ITA Kickoff Classic first round.
