STARKVILLE, Miss. - The No. 25 LSU (1-1) men's tennis team dropped their first match up the season 7-0 on Saturday against No. 11 Mississippi State (3-0) in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Classic at Starkville, Miss.
"We played a very good team that played very well at their home court," head coach Jeff Brown said. "They used the crowd energy and played at a very high level."
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start in doubles. The No. 28 duo of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp for Mississippi State quickly defeated the No. 33 pair of LSU's Chris Simpson and Stefan Szacinski 8-0 on court one.
Over on court two, LSU's pair of Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh kept it close against the Bulldogs' Zach White and Ethan Wilkinson early but White and Wilkinson pulled away and won the set 8-5, effectively clinching the doubles point for the Bulldogs to give them a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi State also got off to a quick start in singles, winning the first set in all six matches.
No. 25 Bogaerts was able to secure Mississippi State's first singles point on court one, defeating LSU's Borsos 6-1, 6-2.
On court four, Angus for the Bulldogs bested LSU's Trinh 6-0, 6-3, increasing the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0. On court two, Mississippi State's No. 81 Stropp defeated LSU's Simpson 6-3, 6-4.
To close out the singles matches, Mississippi State's Dumont beat LSU's Anderson 7-6(4) in the first set, and Anderson battled back and won the second set 6-1. Anderson ultimately fell short and lost the third set in a 10-point tiebreak 10-4.
"Ultimately, a loss is a loss," Brown said. "We have to have a short memory and be able to bounce back and be ready for Indiana tomorrow."
LSU will face No. 23 Indiana (1-3) tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT in the consolation match to close out the weekend at the ITA Kick-Off Classic.
