KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Four members of the LSU men's tennis team captured singles wins on the first day of competition at the Key Biscayne Collegiate Invitational Sunday at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.

Seniors Stefan Szacinski and Mark Bowtell as well as freshmen Joe Hill and Tam Trinh won their opening match.

Competing on court two, Szacinski made quick work of Michigan's Vlad Stefan as he pulled the upset against the nation's 48th-ranked player, 6-3, 6-3. Trinh disposed of Michigan's Michael Zhu on court four in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Bowtell swept Texas' Joey Swaysland, 6-3, 6-1, on court six, and Hill knocked off Michigan's Justin Rossi in a tight contest, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2).

"It was a real solid singles performance with a couple straight-set wins and several three setters of which a few went our way," LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. "We hope to build on that tomorrow. In doubles, we have quite a bit of work to do to get where we want to be, and we will attack that tomorrow."

Chris Simpson fell on court one to Michigan's Evan King, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Roger Anderson dropped his match to Michigan's Alex Petrone, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, on court three. Boris Arias lost in three sets on court five to Michigan's Barrett Franks, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Harrison Kennedy fell in straight sets on court seven to Michigan's Alex Buzzi, 6-1, 6-2.

It was a tough day for the LSU in doubles as the Tigers dropped all four matches. No. 33 Simpson and Szacinski fell in close match to Denver's Enej Bonin and Jens Vorkefeld, 8-6, on court one. Anderson and Trinh lost, 8-4, to Denver's Max Krammer and Fabio Biasion on court two. Arias and Bowtell dropped their match, 8-4, on court three to Denver's Henry Craig and Alex Clinkenbeard, and Hill and Kennedy fell 8-3 on court four to Texas' Ben Chen and Swaysland.

LSU will take to the courts at 9 a.m. CT Monday for day two of the tournament, and the Tigers will open up with singles play against Texas.
