HOUSTON – The No. 24 LSU men’s tennis team grinded out a 4-3 comeback victory over Rice at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Sunday.

The match came down to junior Chris Simpson’s third-set tiebreaker win on court one over Srikar Alla. Sophomore Boris Arias’ 6-2, 6-5 win on court five over David Warren tied the match at 3-3 before Simpson ultimately scored the final point to secure the LSU win. Simpson won the first set 6-4, but lost the second, 6-5. Simpson was down early 1-2 in the third set, but won the set, 6-5.

LSU head coach Jeff Brown said sophomore Andrew Korinek’s 6-5, 6-2 win over Max Andrews gave LSU the push it needed to ultimately take the win.

Andrew Korinek rallied from 5-4, 40-love down receiving,” Brown said. “He broke the serve and won the tiebreaker. That was the spark we needed to set the table for Chris Simpson’s heroics. After not closing out the second set, (Simpson) was down a break for most of the third. Fitness ultimately won it as (Alla) had leg cramps in the tiebreaker.”

LSU (1-0) began the match down 1-0 after losing the doubles point. The Tigers finished with four singles wins, which included three sweeps.

“We turned the momentum of losing the doubles point by getting four first sets in singles,” Brown said.

Sophomore Harrison Kennedy swept Zachary Yablon 6-3, 6-4 on court six. Sophomore Tam Trinh lost to Tommy Bennett 6-3, 6-2 on court three, and Justin Butsch fell 6-3, 6-0 to Adam Gustafsson on court four.

In doubles, No. 60 Chris Simpson and Boris Arias defeated Tommy Bennett and David Warren, 6-1. Both No. 46 Eric Perez and Tam Trinh and Andrew Korinek and Justin Butsch lost their doubles matches, 6-1.

“We learned a lot of lessons today and fortunately we won as well,” Brown said.

LSU travels to Nashville, Tenn. to participate in the ITA Kickoff. The Tigers will take on Wake Forest on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.
