AUBURN, Ala. - Nine members of the LSU men's tennis team will take part in the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships beginning Thursday at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
"It's a good opportunity to see the improvements we have made since our last event," LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. "Everyone is pretty healthy, so it should be a good reflection of what they have done and some of the changes they have been able to put in to their games.
"We like the overall team attitude this fall and the hard work and conditioning on the court, so we would like to see some guys get some solid results out of this weekend. It will set us up for our last event next week and get us ready for the spring season."
Main draw singles and doubles begin play at 8:30 a.m. CT Thursday. Main draw singles and doubles will continue Friday, and consolation singles will begin Friday and run through Sunday.
Main draw singles and doubles will hold quarterfinal rounds Saturday with semifinal play on Sunday and the championship matches on Monday.
Simpson enters the championships with a 3-2 singles record. Anderson, Szacinski and Trinh are 1-1 in singles, while Borsos is 1-2, Kennedy is 0-1, and Arias and Hill are 0-2.
The tournament is the first action for Bowtell since last year's regional championships. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in January and has spent the last 10 months rehabilitating from the disorder. Doctors cleared Bowtell, a redshirt senior, to play earlier in the week.
Hill is the only Tiger who did not receive a singles first-round bye as he will face Ole Miss' John Backstrom in the first match of the day at 8:30 a.m.
In the second round, Anderson will face the tournament's No. 1 seed and fifth-ranked Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss at 9:30 a.m.
Kennedy will play Troy's Tadju Davis at 10 a.m., Bowtell will square off against Alabama's David Vieyra at 11:30 a.m. and Szacinski will play Tulane's Alex Van Cott at 12:30 p.m.
No. 18 ranked and third-seeded Borsos will play the winner of UAB's Lucas Biruve or Tulane's Rodrigo Rappaccioli at 12:30 p.m. Arias, the No. 14 seed, will play the winner of Alvarado Paulo of Southern Miss or Chris Helliar of UAB at 12:30 p.m. Trinh will face either Alabama's Carlos Taborga or Tulane's Dominik Koepfer at 12:30 p.m.
No. 58 ranked and seventh-seeded Simpson will face either Alabama's Stuart Kenyon or UAB's Tom Puetz at 1 p.m. in his second-round match.
All four LSU doubles teams received first-round byes and will not compete until the second round gets underway Friday.
