BATON ROUGE -- English standout James Turbervill of Bristol signed a letter of intent to play with the LSU men’s tennis team, head coach Jeff Brown announced on Tuesday.
Turbervill is currently ranked eighth in the Lawn Tennis Association’s U18 category and holds the spot as No. 39 in the LTA’s Men’s Rankings. The International Tennis Federation ranks the Bristol native as 204 in the world in its junior rankings.
“James is a very talented individual whose tennis skills are excellent,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “He is a quality guy that is going fit in great in a team environment.”
The 2008-09 season proved to be a banner year for Turbervill as he captured three tournament titles. In June 2008, he won the U18 ITF Doubles in Denmark, claimed the U18 ITF Singles title in Ireland in July and closed out the year as winner of the U18 LTA National Grand Prix Tournament in singles.
The newest addition to the men’s tennis team recorded a 10-6 record, blanking three opponents since January en route to a runner-up position at the LTA Men’s British Tour Tournament and U18 International Tennis Federation G4 in England. In addition to the runner-up positions, Turbervill also made an appearance in the quarterfinal round of the U18 ITF G2 Tournament in Tunisia in February 2009.
