BATON ROUGE -- LSU Tennis veteran and New Zealand native Michael Venus advanced to the third round of the US Open men's doubles tournament along with Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan on Friday.

The duo bested the Italian team of Danielle Bracciali and Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-4 to secure a berth in the final 16.

Venus joins current head coach Jeff Brown and Ken Skupski as the only other LSU tennis alumni to achieve this feat at a grand slam. Venus could make LSU history with a win as all three reached the round of 16.

Prior to Venus, Ken's brother and fellow LSU alum Neal Skupski went furthest with an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon mixed doubles.

Next on the schedule for Venus and Kukushkin will be either Austrian Aledander Peya and Brazilian Bruno Soares, or the Australian doubles team of Sam Groth and Chris Guccione.
