Softball Opens SEC Action with Auburn

BATON ROUGE – The eighth-ranked LSU softball team opens SEC action this weekend, hosting 10th-ranked Auburn Friday through Sunday. The first game is slated for 6 p.m. Friday night with Saturday’s game at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s game at 4 p.m.
Game one of the three-game series will stream online through SEC Network+ and WatchESPN with Lyn Rollins and Yvette Girouard on the call. The second game will be on SECN and WatchESPN and Sunday’s game will be on ESPN2 and the WatchESPN app. The all-star team of Beth Mowins, Michele Smith and Amanda Scarborough will have the call.

A team photo of the 2018 LSU softball team will be the giveaway for Friday. Saturday's game will be Alumnae Day. At least 40 LSU softball alumnae will be in attendance Saturday with Kristin Schmidt throwing out the first pitch. As we continue to celebrate the 25th season of LSU softball, 25-year lapel pens will also be given out on Saturday. Sunglass straps will be the giveaway for Sunday's game.

LSU heads into SEC action with a 19-2 overall record, the best start to a season since 2015. LSU is coming off a 5-0 weekend in the LSU Invitational, defeating Illinois State, then No. 23 McNeese State, Purdue and FAU. Amanda Doyle leads the offense with a .448 average. In the last two weeks, she has hit .467 with 14 hits, including five doubles and two home runs to go along with 13 RBI. She finished the last two weeks with a .833 slugging percentage and a .541 on-base percentage. In the circle, Carley Hoover and Allie Walljasper continue to be solid. Hoover has a 0.65 ERA, which ranks 13th in the country, while Allie Walljasper has a 0.93 ERA. The two have combined for 116 strikeouts on the year.
Auburn goes into SEC play with a 23-2 record. Its two losses on the year came against Wisconsin and Long Beach State. Victoria Draper is leading the squad at the plate with a .550 batting average and leads the nation in stolen bases with 29 out of 31 attempts. Kaylee Carlson is Auburn’s top pitcher and is one of four pitchers in the nation with 11 wins this season, which leads the nation. As a unit, Auburn pitchers have the fifth-lowest ERA in the nation at 0.78.
What’s On Deck
Following the Auburn series this weekend, LSU will play host to Western Kentucky for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. before heading to Kentucky for a three-game SEC series March 17-19.
