BATON ROUGE – LSU’s 2017 NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Sam Burns took a big step toward achieving full Web.com Tour status for the 2018 season this past week while running away with the second-stage event of Web.com Tour Qualifying School held at TPC Craig Ranch near Dallas.

Burns finished at 22-under par for 72 holes to finish five shots clear of Max McGreevy in second place in one of five second-stage events running last Tuesday through Friday at sites across the country. Burns posted his low round of the tournament with a 7-under 65 last Tuesday before claiming medalist honors with rounds of 4-under 68, 6-under 66 and 5-under 67 for a final total of 266.

The top-20 finishers at each of the five second-stage locations advanced to the Web.com Tour Q-School Finals coming up Dec. 7-10 at the Devils Claw and Cattail courses at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona.

All players qualifying for the Web.com Tour Q-School Finals have already received conditional status to compete on the Web.com Tour in 2018 while also having the opportunity to improve their status based upon their performance and final position after 72 holes at Whirlwind Golf Club. The winner of the finals will earn full Web.com Tour exemption for the 2018 season.

Winning the event at TPC Craig Ranch continued an impressive start to Burns’ professional career as the former two-time All-American made the cut in each of his two PGA TOUR starts heading into the second stage.

After tying for 43rd place at the Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson (Miss.) on Oct. 29, Burns followed with a top-20 showing at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas just over one week ago to bring his early-season winnings to $74,577 in two PGA TOUR starts. He cracked the Top 10 in his first career PGA TOUR start at the Barbasol Championship on July 23 while tying for sixth place while still competing as an amateur.
