Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 3 in the Baseball America poll and No. 5 in the Collegiate Baseball poll this week … the Tigers have appeared in the Top 5 of at least one poll in all seven weeks of this season … the Tigers hit .341 (59-for-173) in their four games last week with 10 doubles, three triples, and five homers while scoring 34 runs … junior first baseman Chris Chinea hit .444 (8-for-18) last week with three doubles, one homer, four RBI and five runs … Chinea’s home run was his first of the season, and it was an inside-the-park home run in Saturday’s win over Kentucky in Alex Box Stadium … Chinea’s homer was the second inside-the-park dinger of the week for the Tigers, as rightfielder Mark Laird also hit one on Tuesday at Tulane … junior centerfielder Andrew Stevenson batted .421 (8-for-19) in four games last week with two doubles and four runs scored … sophomore leftfielder Jake Fraley batted .353 (6-for-17) last week with one double, seven RBI and three runs scored … junior rightfielder Mark Laird also hit .353 (6-for-17) with one triple, one homer, three RBI and four runs … Laird’s homer, an inside-the-park dinger in LSU’s win Tuesday at Tulane, was the first HR of his college career … Laird’s home run was the first inside-the-park homer for an LSU player since Tyler Moore accomplished the feat on June 1, 2014 versus Houston in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional … senior second baseman Jared Foster was 6-for-18 at the plate last week with two doubles, two homers, six RBI and four runs … Foster leads LSU with seven homers on the season … freshman right-hander Alex Lange delivered another brilliant performance on the mound on Saturday’s win over Kentucky … Lange worked seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on six hits in seven innings with five walks and 13 strikeouts … the 13 Ks tied the career high Lange set on March 14 versus Ole Miss … sophomore right-hander Hunter Newman last week pitched 5.1 shutout innings in two relief appearances and earned a win over Tulane … in 5.1 innings, Newman allowed just three hits with one walk and four strikeouts … Newman picked up the win at Tulane on Tuesday by firing three shutout innings and allowing one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
