BATON ROUGE --- The stands were packed at the Dub Sunday as the 28th-ranked LSU men's tennis team upset the 12th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies, 4-3, and went on to take care of UNO in the following match, 6-1.
After narrowly dropping the doubles point against Texas A&M, the Tigers (6-2) rallied back to win four of six singles matches, including a pair of thrilling three-set victories on the top two courts.
With the Aggies up 3-2, junior Olivier Borsos capitalized on 15th-ranked Alexis Klegou's slow start, taking the first set 6-3. However, Klegou was not going to go down without a fight, beating Borsos 6-2 in the second set. With a chance to tie the match up at 3-3, Borsos edged by Klegou, 7-5.
With the match all tied up, it came down to senior Neal Skupski. Skupski fought off three match points against Colin Hoover in the second set to come back and win 7-5. As they entered into the final set, the crowd came alive to help Skupski take care of Hoover, 6-1, clinching the match point and confirming the upset.
"Today we had a little of everything," head coach Jeff Brown said. "We had a great crowd out here and we were excited from the start. The doubles point went well, but we knew we had to improve. I told them at the break, we will eventually be a No. 12 team, but are we tough enough to play like one today?"
In doubles, Skupski and James Turbervill started the Tigers on the right foot, defeating Texas A&M's John Lewis and Hoover 8-5 to stay undefeated on the season. Both Chris Simpson and Borsos, and Roger Anderson and Stefan Szacinski kept their matches tight, but were unable to finish, dropping their matches 9-8 a piece.
In singles, Turbervill fell 6-4, 6-0 to Niall Angus making it 2-0 in favor of the Aggies.
Tom Knights provided the spark that the Tigers needed with a straight set victory over Jackson Withrow.
Simpson also picked up a victory in singles, winning 7-5, 6-4 over Texas A&M's Jeremy Efferding.
To top off the doubleheader, LSU faced UNO (1-2).
The Tigers had no problem taking care of the Privateers, going undefeated in doubles to claim the doubles point.
In singles, both senior David Roberts and sophomore John Michaelis joined the line up to help the Tigers win 6-1.
Anderson, Knights, Simpson, Skupski and Roberts all picked up wins for the Tigers in singles.
"It was a really good day today," Brown said. "We look forward to taking this momentum into SEC play."
The Tigers will face No. 7 Kentucky, their first SEC opponent of the season, on March 2 at 3:00 p.m. at the Dub.
