BATON ROUGE -- LSU held its second major scrimmage of the spring here Friday as head coach Les Miles put the Tigers through a 100-plus play workout at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

Friday’s scrimmage had the first and second units each getting 45 snaps from scrimmage. The third unit got the remainder of the snaps. The Tigers also spent time working on all phases of special teams, including punting and punt returns and field goal kicking.

“It went well,” Miles said of the scrimmage. “We had a long scrimmage, going more than 100 plays. We went 45 live snaps with the first team, 45 live snaps with the second team and a number of plays with the special teams.

“Both quarterbacks were sharp and threw the ball well. The defense has been ahead of the offense for most of the spring, but the offense showed improvement today. We ran the ball better than we have in the past. I expect the defense to watch film and make the corrections they need to for us to have a strong finish to the spring. We will be in shells tomorrow and work on our mistakes so we can continue to improve.”

Friday’s scrimmage was once again situational, which had the team focusing on 1st and 10 situations as well as third and short and third and long opportunities. The Tigers also spent time working in the redzone and goal line situations. Each unit also had a shot with the two-minute drill.

“This scrimmage was a lengthy one because we wanted to get all the situations in that we could,” Miles said. “This scrimmage was important because we probably won’t have as many situations in the spring game.”

Offensively, Miles singled out the play of both quarterbacks – Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux – as well as the performance of running back Charles Scott. Scott led all rushers with 67 yards. Alley Broussard added 37 yards rushing, followed by Richard Murphy with 31 yards and Keiland Williams with 29 yards.

In the passing game, Flynn connected with Early Doucet touchdown passes of 37 and 7 yards, while Perrilloux tossed a 3-yard scoring pass to tight end J.D. Lott. Doucet led all receivers with six receptions for 66 yards, while Ricky Dixon had four catches. Brandon LaFell added a 5-yard TD reception.

Charles Scott carried the ball well,” Miles said. “Keiland Williams and Richard Murphy also played well. Both quarterbacks threw the ball well and I thought the offensive line made improvement and relieved the quarterbacks from some of the pressure.”

Defensively, the Tigers were once again paced by the play of defensive end Tyson Jackson as well as the performance from a pair of safeties in Curtis Taylor and Craig Steltz, who had an interception against the No. 1 offense in the two-minute drill.

“Tyson had another nice showing,” Miles said. “He’s really having an outstanding spring. I also thought our secondary played well, particularly Curtis Taylor who made a number of nice plays.”

After Saturday’s practice, the Tigers will have only three workouts remaining during the spring, which concludes with the Super Tiger Bowl (spring game) at Noon on Saturday, March 24 in Tiger Stadium.
