METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Zephyrs will hold a luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Ponchartrain Center featuring former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda and LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri.
Themed after the Zephyrs ‘Proud to Call New Orleans Home’ slogan, the luncheon will begin at 10:30am with a social hour and featured speakers discussing the importance of baseball in the Greater New Orleans community. The cost for the event will be $200 for a table of five or $45 for individuals and will include lunch with the scheduled program. All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater New Orleans.
“We are very excited to have Tommy Lasorda and Paul Mainieri attend the luncheon,” said Zephyrs General Manager Mike Schline. “To have people that are so influential to the game at the highest levels will greatly add to our program focusing on the importance of baseball in Louisiana.”
Lasorda is best known for his years managing the Los Angeles Dodgers (1976-1996), where he led the team to eight division titles and two World Championships in 21 seasons. After his retirement, he became a Dodgers executive, and his association with the club has spanned seven decades. He also managed the United States to the gold medal in baseball at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Mainieri was named the head coach of the LSU baseball team on June 28. He had previously served as head coach at Notre Dame, leading the Fighting Irish to 533 wins in 12 seasons. Mainieri takes over an LSU program that has won five College World Series Championships and made 13 CWS appearances in the last 21 seasons.
Both Lasorda and Mainieri will also be attending the Zephyrs game the night of August 10th vs. the Las Vegas 51s and will be signing autographs at the game.
