HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The LSU women’s golf team is off to a strong start in fifth place at the 2019 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Tigers shot a 6-over 290, led by junior Monica Dibildox with a 1-under 70, in today’s first round action.

“I am very pleased with our solid start at such a prestigious event,” said LSU head coach Garrett Runion. “Any time you can start off in front of 8 teams that are ranked inside the top 25 in the country, you know you played well. Now we have to go out the next two days and prove it again.”

Dibildox is in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings and tied her career-low mark set in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship last September. With senior Kathleen Gallagher feeling under the weather, it was up to sophomore Kendall Griffin and rookies Presley Baggett and Alden Wallace to step up in the team scoring.

Griffin shot a 1-over 72 to finish the day in a tie for 20th place, tying her season-low total score. Wallace is in a tie for 28th at 2-over 73, while Baggett rounded out the team scoring with a 4-over 75.

“Long Cove Club is a great course that demands a lot of discipline and our players showed that today,” said Runion. “Everybody was in it all day. Monica and Kendall had two great rounds today, as did Alden and Presley. Kathleen was under the weather and struggled due to her standards a bit, but we look for her to bounce back with a good round tomorrow.”

LSU will be paired up with No. 3 Duke and No. 23 Furman for Round 2 on Saturday. The Tigers will tee off at 8:20 a.m. CT from Hole No. 1. No. 10 South Carolina is in the lead at 2-under, as only nine strokes separate the number one through seven teams in the standings. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
