Baton Rouge, La. Shannon ‘Top Bins’ Cooke is across the pond training with the England U19 squad as it prepares to travel to Algarve, Portugal, for a pair of friendlies with Norway (Jan. 16) and Netherlands (Jan. 20).

“Shannon has high ambitions with both LSU and England,” head coach Brian Lee said. “I’m excited to help her grow on a solid first six months with us on her path to becoming all she wants to be.”

One of 20 players on the trip with the U19 squad, Cooke has registered 20 career caps for the England youth teams during her playing days with plenty of more to come in the future. The Young Lionesses will use the two friendlies this week in preparation for the UEFA Women’s U19 Championship qualifying round that will take place in England in early April.

The highlight of Cooke’s freshman season in the Purple and Gold was undoubtedly her top bins rocket from over 40 yards out in the SEC championship match. With LSU trailing 1-0 in the 72nd minute, Cooke received a pass from fellow freshman Abbey Newton. Cooke took a touch, peaked up at the goal and let the most audacious shot travel towards the goal. The shot, placed perfectly in the top right corner, beat Arkansas’ diving keeper and equalized the match.

The goal pushed the match to overtime and LSU wound up winning its first SEC Tournament title in penalty kicks thanks in large part to Cooke’s heroics. It was her second goal of the season, both of which came during the historic run at the SEC Tournament. She ended the season with six total points (2g & 2a) and was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team for her performance at the conference tournament.
