Tennis Continues Competition at ITA Southern Regional
OXFORD, Miss. – The LSU women’s tennis team went undefeated in opening rounds on Friday in the ITA Southern Regional Championships.
The No. 7 ranked pair of senior Jessica Golovin and sophomore Eden Richardson defeated Polina Mutel and Maria Skyba of Northwestern State, 8-4. The Lady Tigers advanced to the round of 16 where they secured the win against McNeese State’s Giovanna Fioretti and Charoline Erlandsson, 8-1.
Golovin and Richardson squared off against Elena Muller and Ivone Alvaro of Tulane and clenched a quarterfinal win, 8-5. They will face Auburn’s Sophia Graver and Taylor Russo on Sunday in the semifinals.
Freshman Anna Loughlan and senior Kennan Johnson started the doubles round off strong with an 8-5 win over Tulane’s Laura Fabrizi and Adelaide Lavery. The Tiger duo went on to play Ole Miss pair Anna Vrbenska and Allie Sanford in the round of 16. Ole Miss secured the 8-2 win.
The tandem of junior Paris Corley and sophomore Taylor Bridges won their opening match in doubles against Yu Fujioka and Milka Pasanen of South Alabama, 8-2. They went on to face Mississippi State’s Magda Adaloglou and Emma Antonaki and took the win, 8-2. On Saturday Corley and Bridges dropped the quarterfinal match against No. 31 Alexa Bortles and Isolde de Jong of Ole Miss, 8-4.
In the singles round of 64, No. 38 Richardson defeated Lindsay Song of Auburn, 6-4, 6-0. Richardson went on to play Sara Lizariturry and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The sophomore advanced to quarterfinals where she took down No. 122 Anna Vrbenska of Ole Miss, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Corley came out strong in 6-2, 6-2 win over McNeese State’s Marija Mastilovic. In the round of 32, No. 70 Andie Daniell of Alabama secured the 6-3, 6-1 win over Corley.
Bridges defeated Harriet Hamilton of Jacksonville University in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The sophomore went on to the round of 32 where she faced Auburn’s Taylor Russo and won, 7-6(6), 6-3. Bridges dropped her quarterfinals match against No. 53 Sabina Machalov of Ole Miss.
No. 64 Golovin defeated Arina Amaning of Southern Mississippi, 6-2, 6-2. The senior moved on the round of 32 and was defeated by Polina Mutel of Northwestern State, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Johnson won her opening singles match against Southern Mississippi’s Ebru Yazgan, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Tiger moved on to the round of 32 and secured the match win against Auburn’s Caroline Turner,
6-3, 6-0. Johnson moved on to quarterfinals where she lost the match against Ole Miss Tereza Janatova, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Marina Hermanny de Figueiredo took the win against Jana Hecking of UAB, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. She advanced on to play Laura Fabrizi of Tulane winning in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. The freshman faced South Alabama’s Milka Pasanen in quarterfinals where she was defeated, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3.
Day three of singles and doubles play will begin at 8:00 a.m. CT on Sunday.
