HERMOSA BEACH, Ca. – Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss took care of business on Saturday, winning two matches and taking home the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championship.

“It means a lot,” said Nuss following the victory. “It’s also getting to play with Claire. Coming out to California, I’m a Louisiana girl, so coming all the way out here, it’s really great, and the atmosphere is awesome. It means a lot”

30 pairs from 20 colleges competed in Hermosa Beach this weekend, but Coppola and Nuss proved to be the best duo in the sand. By winning, Coppola and Nuss have earned the right to represent the United States at the 2018 FISU World University Championship, held July 9-13 in Munich, Germany.

“We are super excited,” said Nuss about the opportunity to play in the World University Games. “That was the goal coming in and we can’t wait.”

Coppola and Nuss had to win two matches on Saturday to clinch the championship and it started with a straight set, 21-17 and 23-21, victory over Cal Poly’s Torrey Van Winden and Emily Sonny.

In the championship, Coppola and Nuss had to go through FSU's Hailey Luke and Katie Horton. The LSU pair made quick work in the first set, taking it 21-9, but Luke and Horton responded in the second set, winning 21-17.

“We looked at each other (going into the third set) and we knew that we were capable of doing this," said Coppola. "We trusted each other and knew that we were going to get it done when we needed to.”

In the championship set, Coppola and Nuss performed as they did in the opening set of the match as the LSU duo took the set, 15-8, winning the championship.
