Waters Named to SEC Basketball Freshman Team

BATON ROUGE – LSU point guard Tremont Waters was named to the coaches All-Southeastern Conference freshman team announced as part of the league’s awards package on Tuesday.

The league men’s basketball teams begin gathering in St. Louis for first round games Wednesday at the Scottrade Center. LSU, the No. 10 seed, will meet No. 7 seed Mississippi State on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the third second-round game of the day. The game will be telecast by the SEC Network and broadcast on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Eagle 98.1 FM).

Waters was one of eight players named to the freshman squad along with Collin Sexton of Alabama, Daniel Gafford of Arkansas, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Kevin Knox of Kentucky, Nick Weatherspoon of Mississippi State, Jontay Porter of Missouri and TJ Starks of Texas A&M.

Sexton and Knox were chosen as the co-Freshman of the Year.

Waters, coming off a 14 points, 10 assists game on Saturday against Mississippi State, averaged 15.6 points per game, 3.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists during the 30-game regular season. In the 18-SEC games, he averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.

The New Haven, Connecticut product is second in the SEC in assists average and No. 1 (2.0) in steals average. He has set the freshman record for LSU in assists at 177 and counting and he is fifth for a single season in LSU history.

His 10 assists on Saturday marked the fifth time this season he has posted 10 or more assists in a game, topped by the 11 versus Arkansas on Feb. 3.
