Walljasper, Hoover on USA Softball POY 'Watch List'

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU senior All-American pitchers Allie Walljasper and Carley Hoover were named to the 2018 USA Softball Player of the Year Top 50 “Watch List” the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.

Walljasper, a native from Manteca, California, was 18-6 in the circle for the Tigers in 2017. She tallied 101 strikeouts and finished the season with a 1.61 earned run average. She also finished the year with a .219 opponent batting average. She recorded six shutouts on the year and led the team in saves with two.

Hoover, a native from Clemson, South Carolina, ended the 2017 season with a 15-8 record and the team’s lowest ERA at 1.19. She recorded four shutouts, to go along with a team-leading 169 strikeouts and a .175 opponent batting average. This is the second-straight year that Hoover has been named to the Top 50 “Watch List’

The preseason “Watch List” includes 23 seniors, 18 juniors and nine sophomores, with freshman ineligible for the consideration. (Freshman can be considered for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award once they have competed at the collegiate level). LSU is one of nine schools to have multiple nominees. The Southeastern Conference is also well-represented with eight member-schools.

The Top 25 Finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 25. While an athlete does not have to be on the “Watch List” to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 9 and the Top 3 announced May 23. The 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 29.

Announced today by USA Softball, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award enters its 17th season and recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female collegiate softball players across the country.
